How to obtain an E911 Address

The Douglas County Surveyor’s Office is responsible for issuing physical property addresses outside of all incorporated city limits in Douglas County. Addresses are issued at the point of access or the main year round driveway access location.

1. Print Address Application Form: Fill out one E911 Address Application for each habitable dwelling or recreational site address request.

2. Enclose a site map showing your driveway location: Include distances from the center of your driveway at the road, to any driveways across the street. If this does not apply then provide distances to the nearest driveways on the same side of the street, or to your property lines as they intersect the road, whichever is closest. It may help to make a print of the aerial view of your property from this web site, and use it to aid in your driveway location.

3. Sign and Date: Applications without a signature or date will not be processed.

4. E911 Sign Fee: Submit a $25.00 sign fee for each address, payable to “Douglas County”. This fee covers the cost of setting a blue reflective E911 sign at your driveway.

5. Deliver or Mail application to Douglas County Public Works: Application can be dropped off at 526 Willow Drive or mailed to: Douglas County E911 Address PO BOX 398 ALEXANDRIA MN 56308.

6. What else should I know?: To keep the cost of issuing addresses low, we rely on the Owner or Builder to provide accurate information and measurements to the driveway location. If false or incorrect measurements are given and the driveway is later found to be in a different location than stated on the Application, the property will be re-addressed and the owner will be charged a new $25 sign fee, along with an address change, at their expense. It is important to furnish enough information to ensure your address will not need to be changed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

7. Signs are set in the Spring and Fall each year: Signs are installed in June to allow for driveway to be finished after spring weight restrictions are lifted, and in October before winter sets in. Owners are responsible for temporary signage until your permanent sign is installed.

8. What will my Post Office Zip Code be?: The United States Postal Service is responsible for assigning Zip Codes. The address application will be returned with a proposed Post Office Zip Code and the contact phone number of the Post Office. It is the responsibility of the owner to verify mail delivery with the Post Office.

9. How long before I receive my address?: Most addresses are issued and back in the mail within 2-3 working days, provided all the required information is supplied on the Application.

10. How do I get a replacement E911 Sign?: If an E911 sign is stolen or knocked down, it is the property owner's responsibility to see that it is replaced. Replacement sign blades cost $20.00 and posts are $5.00. Call 320-762-2988 to order.

11. Who to contact with questions: Contact Joe Zunker at Douglas County Public Works Survey Division with any address or road name questions. 320-762-2988
