Menubar and Toolbar

The menubar provides options to interact with the map.  For example, you can toggle the reference map on and off.

The toolbar tools provide options to navigate the map, query the map layers and measure.  The individual tools are explained below.

The Identify Tool is very important. Use it to click on any layer that is checked (TURNED ON) to extract information or to retrieve PDF maps.

Previous Map Extent - Clicking this button will return you to the previous view.

Next Map Extent - Clicking this button will send you to the next view after you clicked the previous view button.

Zoom In Tool - Clicking on the map will zoom in on the point chosen centering the map on the point or click and drag to manually define the area to zoom to.

Zoom Out Tool - This tool allows you to zoom out from a point clicked on the map or click and drag to manually define the area to zoom to..

Pan Map - This tool allows you to recenter the map without zooming in or out. Click on the pan tool then click on the map and drag.

Zoom to Full Extent - Clicking this button will zoom the map to the full extent.

Identify - This tool allows you to identify (query) features on the map by clicking it on the map.  The tool will drill down through all visible layers and return attribute information configured for each map layer.  The identify results are displayed in the table of contents pane.

Select Feature - This tool allows you to select a feature or several features in the map and highlight the selection.  For example, it can be used to select a parcel to view more information on them or zoom to them.  One use is to select a feature to print a report or create a printed map.

Clear Selection - This tool allows you to clear a selection or highlight.

Measure Length - This tool allows you to measure a length by drawing a line on the map.  The length is reported back to you in the table of contents.

Measure Area - This tool allows you to measure an area by drawing a polygon on the map.  The area is reported back to you in the table of contents.

Measure Area - This tool allows you to prepare a PDF for viewing or printing.  After pushing this button, you need to follow the instructions in the PRINT TO PDF window.

Microsoft Virtual Earth - This tool allows you to click on any area in Douglas County to open a new window to view Oblique Aerial photography courtesy of Microsoft.  Use the tools in the new window to view photography from different angles and heights.

Table of Contents (Map Layers/Legend)

GIS maps are a series of data layers arranged in a way to present geographic data  in an easy to read and logical format.  A layer of information typically represents only one type of information, for instance on the map, land parcels are one layer of information.  When multiple layers are represented we see a map. A GIS map can be used to customize the information seen.  In this case we have the zoning layer along with the land parcels, lakes, and roads layers to create a basic understandable map.

Please hover your mouse pointer over the folders and the layers to see the map tip appear, usually within a few seconds. If you need to read it after it disappears, just move the mouse away and back over the object to make it reappear. The maptip provides a form of help to the user on how to use the application.

- Go To drop downs - will move the map to the location chosen. There should be one for each Township and City in the County, plus more at times.

- Group of Layer - click on the folder to expand or collapse the group of layers. Here you see the Land Resource - Environmental Group of Layers expanded.

- Map Layer - click the check box to toggle on/off the visibility of the layer on the map.  Please note the icons to the right of the layer name!   The first one turns on and off the legend for the layer, the second and third icon make the layer more transparent and less transparent for each click of the icon. For example, the PLAT Layer is faded and to see it darker, you keep clicking the unfade (right) button till it is dark enough for you.

- Legend - display of the layer symbology, if it exists.   Please click the icon to the right of the layer name to get this to display.

The right side of the screen is the table of contents or map layer/legend pane.  Here it is possible to turn layers of information on and off on the map by checking and un-checking the box next to the layer name.  For instance un-checking the box next to the "Zoning" layer would turn off the Zoning on the map, they become invisible. The reverse is also true, checking the box next to "Zoning" will turn on, or make visible, all the Zoning on the map.

Clicking on the headings for each information category will hide the layers within it group.  For instance clicking on the word "Parcels, Plats, and Land" will hide or show the Lines and Text as seen in the Half Section Maps, the Section Lines, Parcels, Plats, Tillable areas, Which Townships are fully COGOed, and the TWP lines in the legend window. This is for saving space in the window.

Background images such as 2007 Aerial Photos are available and will cover the background, allowing the user to view information such as roads and parcels while looking at aerial or satellite images.  Please note that at some scales the images will lose quality or may not plot on the map.  If this is the case try viewing the map at a different scale.  Also, the zoning layer will cover up the Aerial Photos unless you click on the button to fade the layer.
